January 2010

Forward Thinking and Innovative

Happy New Year! The New Year brings the promise of growth and innovation to the power industry and to Siemens PTI along with it. As we celebrate 40 years of making our knowledge your power, Siemens PTI is committed to bringing new and improved products and services to you. From the newest releases of our PSS® Product Suite software tools to the introduction of certification programs offered by Siemens Power Academy TD – North America (NA), Siemens PTI will continue to address your current and future needs.

PSS®E Version 32, our flagship software, was released in the final quarter of 2009 with important new features and completely overhauled documentation. For 2010, we will make PSS®E universally available for undergraduate research at universities. Graduating students will enter the growing power industry workforce with PSS®E experience, requiring less training and rapidly becoming productive employees. Additionally, Siemens PTI has increased the number of Software Technology Users Group Meetings. We recently held meetings in Europe, China and Australia, all well attended by users; many more are planned for 2010.

Much is happening within our Siemens Power Academy TD – NA. Please check out the 2010 Education and Training Catalog, as Siemens PTI is very excited about new course offerings as well as the introduction of a new certification program. In addition, we have developed an online credit card payment option to make course registration easy. Siemens PTI looks forward to continuing strong links with our customers in 2010 via our Power Academy.

Within the Network Consulting arena, our expanding office locations provide regionally pertinent support. Recently our Mountain View, California staff completed a study regarding power transfer from Montana to the Pacific Northwest. Read about this effort in Colstrip 500 kV Power Transfer Capabilities Studied.

Finally, I attended a speech by President Barack Obama at a local college. Please read Smart Grid a Topic of Presidential Visit, for an extract of his comments.

At Siemens PTI we have enjoyed spending the past 40 years working and growing with you. We look forward to being your partner of choice for the next 40 years. I hope you find this edition informative, as we have much news to pass on to our valued users and customers.

Colstrip 500 kV Power Transfer Capabilities Studied

The transmission owners of the Colstrip 500 kV Transmission System and the Bonneville Power Administration wanted to evaluate the ability of their existing 500 kV transmission assets to support additional power transfers from Montana to the Pacific Northwest. This study was initiated in anticipation of significant new generator interconnection requests and transmission requests. One benefit of this study was the identification of the level of power transfers that could be supported from existing facilities prior to the need to study, permit, design and construct new transmission. Siemens PTI conducted this study in 2009.
