What Are Flowgates?

Flowgates are designated as a subset of proxies for transmission limitation and transmission service usage. The concept of flowgates has been actively developed under NERC initiatives for sharing transmission constraints for TLR (transmission loading relief).

Flowgates are defined together with other monitored elements (branches, interfaces) within the monitored element definition file. All PSS™MUST functions including FCITC limits analysis, parallel transfer impact analysis, generation sensitivity analysis, impact and sensitivity analysis can be applied to flowgate constraints.

The major difference between branches/interfaces and flowgates is that while monitored branches and interfaces are normally checked in the base case and ALL contingencies, flowgates are checked only in the base case (for the base case flowgates) or for only ONE contingency, as specified in the flowgate definition.

Flowgates are defined in a format developed for and only implemented in PSS™MUST. See website for more information and datasets.
