Siemens PTI eNewsletter

Welcome to the latest eNewsletter from PTI USA. The renaissance in transmission planning is occurring worldwide driven by the markets and aging transmission facilities characteristic of the systems in the USA. However, to deliver world-class products and services requires that we select the best of the best, and this issue shows that we are attentive to our world of customers’ immediate solution needs.

Additionally, the advent of new technologies that enable once only dreamt of solutions are being organized into strategies such as SmartGrid. These new strategies began as solutions looking for a problem, but are rapidly being adopted as foundational building blocks for the future. It’s almost like power engineering is back in fashion! Oh to be that new graduate with an electrical engineering degree - the sky’s the limit!

Solutions that PTI USA is presently providing into our rapid-paced industry include organizing massive numbers of interconnection and alternative expansion plans and coordinating these among many local and remote planning engineers (MOD™), innovative cooperative university programs to develop knowledgeable and experienced graduates for the industry, new consulting services and new software solutions.

For example, we’ll shortly be releasing Rev31 of PSS™E that represents the culmination of our largest upgrade to PSS™E ever. This release, due in September, integrates all PSS™E functionality under one contiguous Windows shell. This has also allowed us to bring you new visualization and analysis modules such as probabilistic reliability for advanced analysis of expansion alternatives.

Much more activity is on the drawing board in all three of our departments - consulting, software and education - as we meet the challenges and lead our industry into the brave new future. Stay tuned to our eNewsletter.

UCTE Chooses PSS™EUCTE, the Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission and Electricity in Europe (www.ucte.org), has recently purchased PSS™E. The UCTE will use the Power Flow, Dynamic Simulation and Graphical Model Builder (GMB) capabilities of PSS™E to study the interconnected systems of their members which include most of Europe and parts of North Africa.

Power System Visualization with Google Earth™Google Earth™ is a powerful tool that combines Google’s search feature with a rich variety of visual information - high resolution satellite imagery, maps, terrain data, multimedia content and life-like models of buildings. Google Earth™ is readily available and can be easily downloaded from (www.google.com) and provides an easy interface for 3D viewing and sharing of geographic information. Additionally the Google Earth community with millions of users around the world is a valuable and free resource for gathering and sharing ideas.

By incorporating Google Earth™ technology into Siemens PTI’s product suite, we bring to your desktop a wealth of possibilities - view graphical one-line diagrams against the backdrop of virtually any location, add tailored 3D models of power plants, view the area spanned by an outage, fly over an entire network or zoom in to a particular transmission tower. Using this new feature engineers can explore by visualizing location specific data related to power systems as well as create powerful presentations

PSS™E Performs IEC Fault AnalysisVersion 31.0 of PSS™E will perform the IEC 60909 fault analysis in addition to its other fault analyses capabilities. This new fault calculation methodology is a self-contained analysis in PSS™E. All that is required prior to entering the IEC fault calculation is a valid load flow working case. For unbalanced fault calculations sequence data is also required.

Model on Demand Software Debuts- Bringing Consistency to Data InputsThe Midwest ISO (MISO) recently went live with their implementation of Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc., Power Technologies International’s (Siemens PTI) Model on Demand (MOD™web) software application. In so doing, MISO’s Regulatory & Economic Standards Department became the first to use the newest and greatly enhanced MOD™web release for their members to create time-based planning models.

Are You Getting the Most from PSS™E on Your Multi-Core Computer? For several years, Siemens PTI and Axceleon, Inc. have formed a partnership to bring you the ease of running PSS™E in a compute cluster environment. A demonstration copy of Axceleon’s product, EnFuzion®, is provided in the PSS™E releases, beginning with Version 30. Many customers have successfully adopted the cluster computing paradigm and reaped the benefits of using PSS™E in a parallel processing environment, expediting contingency analyses with a factor approaching the number of parallel CPUs they put into play.

Siemens PTI Software Technology UGM 2007 a SuccessThe 2007 Siemens PTI Software Technology User Group Meeting (UGM) was held, April 16 -19, at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. This year a new format was introduced which included individual meetings for users of PSS™MUST, PSS™E, MOD™web and PSS™ODMS. Presentations ranged from updates on the latest new features to a glimpse of the future direction planned for each of the respective software products. Each individual UGM also included a forum where users had an opportunity to ask product related questions, voice concerns and to offer suggestions for product enhancements.

Siemens Power Academy TDSeeing the need for greater industry commitment in the retention and development of superior technical talent to operate the complex power grids of North America, Siemens has stepped up its investment in a North America-based training platform for the T&D industry. Building upon its two-year-old acquisition of Power Technologies International (Siemens PTI), Siemens has launched a Siemens Power Academy TD Training Center, based in Schenectady, New York, U.S., where PTI was originally founded and has been providing training since 1969.

August 2007 - June 2008 Courses for Power System EngineersSiemens PTI offers training programs addressing all aspects of power system engineering, including: generation, transmission, distribution and industrial/commercial utilization. Our programs are developed and taught by real world experienced staff engineers with advanced engineering degrees complemented by first-hand experience solving power systems problems throughout the world. We are also uniquely able to provide insight into future software product developments, meet the developers and provide direct feedback from the course to our software development process – no other education provider can offer this!
